The electrode is the comparison
Sinker EDM needs a graphite or copper electrode that mirrors the desired cavity. That electrode has to be designed, CNC machined, often in multiple roughing and finishing versions, and it wears during use. For a complex texture or a one-off cavity, electrode production can dominate both lead time and cost.
Laser engraving needs a 3D model and a machine. There is no tooling to produce, no wear compensation to plan, and a design change means editing a file rather than cutting a new electrode.
Where lasers clearly win
Textures and surface patterns. Leather grains, technical patterns and logos on mould surfaces are laser work almost exclusively now. Chemical etching, the previous method, involved masking, acids and limited repeatability.
Small features and sharp internal corners. A laser has no minimum electrode radius, so internal corners can be genuinely sharp.
Modification and repair. Adding a logo or changing a texture on an existing mould does not require dismantling and electrode work.
Difficult materials. Hardened tool steel and carbide engrave without regard to hardness, since the process is ablation rather than cutting.
Where EDM still wins
Deep, high-volume cavity removal remains EDM territory. Removing several cubic centimetres of steel by ablation is slow, and the economics reverse quickly with depth.
The hybrid reality
Most tool rooms now use both, and the sensible division is by geometry: EDM for bulk cavity removal, laser for texture, fine detail, sharp corners and modification. Shops that treat the laser as an EDM replacement tend to be disappointed; those treating it as a complementary process with different strengths generally are not.
