When permanent part marking methods can’t be applied directly on the part due to material constraints, size, or financial considerations, a bag and tag approach is often a proper solution. Mainly, industries with smaller and more delicate product components adopt this method.

Bag and tag marking offers some simple and clear benefits:

But it has considerable downsides regarding reliability and control. Tags or labels linked to the component packaging can get detached or misplaced. Over time, parts may lose their identification entirely, making traceability impossible. Disconnected tagging can lead to serious quality control problems, especially when managing critical components or in-field product servicing.

Bag and tag are ideal for temporary tracking or delivery identification. However, from my personal experience with product design and quality management, this method isn’t enough when assured traceability over the product lifecycle is essential. Always give preference to permanent direct marking in situations where durability, reliability, and quality control are important.
