Engineering Controls
Engineering controls are the first defense against Class 4 laser hazards. Beam enclosures reduce risks to Class 1 levels. Where full covers are not possible, barriers, curtains, and interlock systems protect users and mark the Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ). Interlocks stop the beam instantly if doors or panels open.
An LSO (Laser Safety Officer) ensures controls work, sets NHZ boundaries, and places warning signs. Studies show NHZ rules can cut accidents by up to 70%.
Key international requirements:
- Protective glass windows matched to the laser’s wavelength
- Interlock systems on doors and panels
- Dual safety shutters
- Key-switch master controls
- Compliance with ANSI Z136.1, IEC 60825-1, ISO 13849-1
Tip:Â Always confirm interlocks and barriers are in place before starting the laser.
