Stainless edge quality: the specification everyone over-buys

Bright, oxide-free edges cost real money in gas and cycle time. A surprising share of parts never need them, and shops are starting to sort accordingly.

Cutting stainless steel with high-pressure nitrogen produces a clean, bright, oxide-free edge that welds and polishes without further preparation. It is the reference standard, and it is expensive: high gas purity, high pressure, large nozzles and a slower feed than oxygen or air would permit.

Not every part is a visible part

The observation driving change on shop floors is simple. A large share of stainless parts are structural, internal, or destined for painting, coating or an assembly where the cut edge is never seen and never welded. For those parts, the bright edge is a specification inherited from the drawing template rather than a functional requirement.

Air cutting stainless produces a darker, lightly oxidised edge. It is entirely serviceable for brackets, internal frames, enclosures and mounting plates. The gas cost falls to compressor electricity, and cycle times often improve.

The obstacle is the drawing

The reason this saving goes uncaptured is organisational. Edge condition is usually specified once, in a template, and then propagated across every part in a product family. Nobody revisits it, because nobody owns it: the designer specifies the safe option, the estimator prices what the drawing says, and the shop cuts what it was sold.

Shops that have captured the saving did so by reviewing edge requirements as a product-level exercise, not a per-job one — sorting parts into "visible or welded" and "neither", and changing the drawings for the second group.

Where the bright edge still earns its cost

Food, pharmaceutical and architectural work genuinely need it, both for corrosion behaviour and appearance. Parts that will be TIG welded without preparation need it. Anything that will be electropolished needs a clean starting condition.

The point is not that nitrogen cutting is wasteful. It is that a single default applied to every stainless part guarantees paying for a finish that a substantial fraction of the work throws away.
