Marking parameters are material specific, finish specific and requirement specific. Getting a good mark on a particular stainless grade with a particular surface finish, at a required contrast and without damaging the passive layer, is a small development exercise. Doing it for forty material and finish combinations is a substantial body of knowledge.
That knowledge determines mark quality, cycle time and reject rate simultaneously, and it transfers to any new job on a known material instantly — if it can be found.
How it gets lost
The failure mode is familiar. Settings live in the marking software on the machine, named after the job rather than the material. An operator who developed a good setting for a particular customer's part cannot find it when a similar part arrives under a different name.
Parameters get adjusted in place and overwrite the previous version. When a change makes things worse, there is nothing to return to.
And when the operator who developed most of them leaves, the naming logic leaves with them.

Naming by material and requirement, not by customer or job. A setting for "316 stainless, brushed, annealed mark, medical" is findable. A setting for "Acme bracket rev C" is not.
Recording what was verified. A parameter set validated against a grading reader, or against corrosion testing, is different from one that looked acceptable. The record should say which.
Version history. Keeping the previous version when a change is made.
Storage outside the machine. Machines are replaced, and their internal libraries do not always transfer.
Why it matters more than equipment
A shop with a well-organised library gets consistent results from modest equipment. A shop without one re-develops settings repeatedly, produces variable quality, and cannot quote confidently on unfamiliar work.
In a market where experienced operators are scarce, the library is also the mechanism by which an inexperienced operator produces work an experienced one would — which is the actual constraint most marking operations face.
