What the identifier contains

A UDI has a device identifier — the model, essentially — and a production identifier covering lot or batch, serial number, manufacturing date and expiry where applicable. The production portion varies per unit or per batch, which means the marking system cannot mark a fixed string.

Where the difficulty is

Data source. The marking system must receive the correct identifier for the specific device in front of it, from the manufacturing execution system. That integration is the substance of most UDI projects.

Sequencing and traceability. If devices are marked out of order, or if a mark fails and the device is remarked, the association between physical device and record must survive. Systems that assume a fixed sequence break when reality intervenes.

By comparison, the physical marking is well understood. Annealing marks on stainless instruments, UV marking on polymer components, and additive-activated marking on plastics all have established parameter sets, and the constraint is the permanence and biocompatibility requirement rather than the marking capability.

Choosing a marking system for UDI on marking specifications alone misses the point. Integration capability — protocols, data handling, verification recording, and how the system behaves when something goes wrong — determines whether the project succeeds.

Manufacturers who scoped UDI as a marking purchase have generally found the integration work exceeded the equipment cost, and that the auditable portion of the requirement lived entirely in the software.
