A marking laser is a Class 4 source: capable of eye and skin injury from direct and scattered radiation. A marking machine sitting on a production floor with an operator loading parts by hand is normally a Class 1 product, meaning no hazardous radiation is accessible during normal operation.

The difference between those two statements is entirely the enclosure and its interlocks.

What the classification depends on

Class 1 is achieved by the whole system: panels of adequate optical density for the wavelength, viewing windows filtered for that wavelength, interlocks that cut the beam when an access door opens, and the absence of any aperture large enough to pass a hazardous beam.

Wavelength matters more than intuition suggests. A window rated for 1064 nm fiber output provides no protection against a 355 nm UV source. Replacing a marker without replacing the window is a common and serious error.

What routinely breaks it

Pass-through openings. Cutting a slot for a conveyor or a part chute is the most frequent modification, and the most frequently mishandled. An opening needs a labyrinth or beam trap geometry, not just a small size.

Defeated interlocks. Interlocks get bypassed during setup and not restored, which is the single most common finding in laser safety audits.

Window degradation. Filter windows age, and fume deposits are cleaned with solvents that attack the coating.

Undocumented modifications. Adding a camera port or a light means adding an aperture.

The organisational point

Class 1 classification belongs to the system as installed and as currently configured, not to the machine as it left the factory. A facility that modifies an enclosure becomes responsible for the resulting classification, which usually means a documented assessment.

That is not a bureaucratic observation. The practical consequence of losing Class 1 status is that the machine now requires controlled access, eyewear and a laser safety officer — the entire operational burden the enclosure existed to avoid.
