A material tower with automated load and unload turns a cutting machine into something closer to a continuous process. Sheets feed in, cut nests come out, and the machine runs through breaks and overnight. The productivity gain is genuine and easy to measure, which is why these systems sell well.

The constraint moves downstream

What follows is less often planned for. A machine that cut eight sheets a shift with an operator now cuts twenty-five. Those twenty-five nests arrive at the unload station as stacks of mixed parts that still need separating, deburring, counting and routing to the next operation.

The cutting bottleneck is gone. A sorting bottleneck has replaced it, and sorting is manual, unglamorous and rarely capitalised. Shops that install automation without addressing it accumulate work-in-progress at the unload table — parts that are cut, paid for, and not yet available to the next operation.

Nesting is part of the answer

The mitigation begins upstream. Nests built for sorting group parts by destination rather than purely by material yield, so a completed nest maps to a single downstream operation instead of eleven. Part marking — etching a part number directly during the cut — removes the identification step that otherwise requires a drawing and a tape measure.

Both cost a little material yield. Both usually pay for themselves several times over in sorting labour.

Skeleton handling and small parts

The other practical constraint is what happens to the skeleton and to parts too small to survive automated unloading. Micro-joints hold small parts in place, but they then need breaking out by hand. Some shops route genuinely small parts to a separate machine rather than fighting the automation, which is a sensible division rather than a failure.

What to measure

The metric that reveals whether automation is working is not machine utilisation. It is the time between a part being cut and that part being available at the next operation. Shops that track it find their improvement projects reorder themselves quickly.
