A turn towards sustainable development in the metal processing industry

Climate change is already affecting the entire world, and increasingly frequent extreme weather conditions such as droughts, heat stroke, heavy rainfall, floods and landslides are affecting Europe as well.

The world is striving for solutions to mitigate global warming. Using renewable energy from the energy sector to reduce emissions in all sectors is key to decarbonising the global economy and opening up brand new business models for energy suppliers.

In oredr to achieve climate neutrality, it is necessary to reduce carbon emissions. With the Paris Agreement, Europe committed itself to becoming carbon neutral by the second half of the 21st century.

How to reduce CO2 emissions in the metal processing industry?

The metal manufacturing and processing industry is one of the largest industrial CO2 emitters and therefore has a strong focus on reducing the CO2 emissions.
Total global steel production is expected to grow around 30% by 2050, so there is, of course, a huge need to reduce CO2 emissions coming from this industry.

Higher speed and a smaller environmental footprint thanks to the fiber laser technology

Effective manufacturing processes are key to responding to numerous customer inquiries.

In order to become faster and CO2 more neutral, the Laser Ing company has made a technological transition from classic CO₂ lasers to new technologies, the fiber laser.

This technological transformation has increased efficiency, because with the same energy input, twice as much power is generated during the cutting process as compared to a CO₂ laser while reducing CO2 emissions at the same time.

A fiber laser cutter achieves five times the cutting speed, generating three to four times more parts per unit of time, together with 50% less operating costs compared to CO2 lasers. This represents a great opportunity based on creating more machine capacity. If you are using multiple lasers, you might consider replacing two CO2 laser cutting machines with one fiber laser cutting machine. This would increase your production efficiency and reduce your environmental footprint – said the CEO and the founder of the company, Anđelko Kaščel.

Laser Ing recommendations for reducing CO2 emissions in the metal industry

  • Energy optimization (transition to newer a technology, a better energy efficiency)
  • Recycling (better utilization of scrap metal)
  • Training and awareness (raising workers awareness, that different approaches can optimize the utilization of machinery, equipment, processes and other steps; in order to organize the production efficiently)
  • Paperless business (application of ERP in all work processes)
  • Electricity generation for our own production; by using the solar systems
