1. You Can Mark Small Parts
A 1D barcode needs width. If you are marking a small valve or a surgical tool, a 1D code literally won’t fit. A 2D DataMatrix code can store more data in a square as small as 3mm x 3mm.4
2. It Survives the Factory Floor
In an industrial environment, parts get scratched, painted, and greasy.
- 1D Code: A single scratch across the bars kills the scan.
- 2D Code: Thanks to error correction, a DataMatrix code can be partially drilled through or covered in grease and still scan instantly.
3. No More “Laser Aiming”
Scanning a 1D code requires aiming the red laser line perfectly across the bars. 2D scanners use cameras (imagers), meaning you can wave the scanner at any angle—upside down or sideways—and it captures the data.6 This speeds up assembly lines significantly.
